
No. 22/21 UNF Finishes 14th at NCAA Championships

OOLTEWAH, Tenn. – The University of North Florida golf team finished 14th with an 8-over, 872 (292-293-287) at the 2010 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championships at The Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn. Sophomore Sean Dale tied for 25th after shooting a 1-under, 215 (72-74-69).
Dale's score led the Ospreys as he turned in his best round on the final day with a 3-under, 69. Senior J.C. Horne tied for 41st with a 1-over, 217 (73-74-70).
Freshman Kevin Phelan finished with a 10-over, 226 (72-71-83), tying for 111st while sophomore Joe Byun tied for 116th with an 11-over, 227 (75-76-76). Senior Jordan Gibb rounded out the scoring for the Ospreys, shooting even par in the final round to finish with a 13-over, 227 (83-74-72), tying for 128th.
“The team battled today to the end,” said head coach Scott Schroeder. “We had great rounds by our seniors. J.C. and Jordan both did a great job of competing all day. Sean played solid and finished strong. Joe finished a solid week for him. The course set up was real long which does not really fit our team, but they competed great. We finished off a great season. A top-15 finish at NCAA finals is the best in program history. This was a fun team and a great ride that we look to continue next season.”
No. 4/1 Oklahoma State claimed the top finish with a 14-under, 850 (284-284-283) while No. 11/19 Florida State finished second with a 10-under, 854 (283-279-292). No. 15/17 Georgia Tech claimed third place, shooting 6-under, 858 (290-282-286) and No. 5/3 Washington was fourth with a 4-under, 860 (289-288-283).
In fifth place was No. 1/9 Oregon with a 3-under, 861 (284-294-283). No. 9/5 Augusta State was sixth with a 1-under, 863 (287-288-288) and No. 10/11 Texas Tech was seventh after shooting 3-over, 867 (302-285-280). No. 2 Stanford, No. 16 Arizona State and No. 25 San Diego all tied for eighth with 4-over, 868's and will vie for the final spot in match play with a playoff on Friday morning.
The Ospreys end the 2009-10 season after turning in one of the best in program history. UNF finished in the top-5 at 12 of the team's 13 tournaments this season, including two tournament titles (John Hayt Invitational and BancorpSouth Intercollegiate) and four second place finishes. The Ospreys finished in the top-10 at the other two tournaments.
Individually for the Ospreys, Dale, Byun and Gibb all had individual top finishes this season at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, the John Hayt Invitational and the Schenkel E-Z-GO Invitational, respectively. Phelan turned in a second place finish at the NCAA South Central Regional.
UNF is ranked 22nd in the Golfstat Index and 21st in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. Individually for the Ospreys, Dale is 13th in the Golfstat Index and 21st in the Golfweek/Sagarin standings while Phelan is 96th and 102nd, respectively.
