JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida track and field teams finished their last regular season home meet with North Florida's women scoring 211 points topping the competition. The men came in second with a total of 78 points, finishing behind The Citadel.
Both the men and the women vaulted well with sophomore Christina King tying UNF's school record with her height of 3.80m which was set earlier by senior Anne DelBovo in last weekend's meet. King and Delbovo came in first and second in the pole vault with DelBovo's height of 3.65m.
“The pole vaulters were awesome today,” said head coach Mark VanAlstyne. "Christina and Anne has had a fantastic battle going on with Anne breaking Christina's pole vault record last weekend and Christina coming back to tie it. It has been fun to watch.”
Freshman Taylor Britton put up a personal record and a top height on the team with a 4.35m vault for the men's team. Britton ended the day coming in second-place.
In the long jump, freshman Jennifer Smyth placed first with a jump of 5.45m. Smyth still holds the team's best jump of 5.58m, which is fourth in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Freshman Jasmine Jackson posted a personal record of 5.40m in the long jump for a second place finish.
Smyth also finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 11.24m. In the other jumping events, senior Elise Trexler placed first once again for the Ospreys in the high jump already holding a top 18 ranking in the nation with her height of 1.78m. Trexler finished the day with 1.65m jump, but went for a height of 1.81 for the possibility of a top 10 ranking.
“Elise continues to look great, what a good showing she had today,” said VanAlstyne. "Even though she already won the event with her 1.65m jump we wanted her to attempt 1.81m to get her ready for finals, because we feel she can do it.”
In the other field events, senior Ashton McGuire and sophomore Kayla Mobley finished first and second in the javelin, respectively. McGuire moved to first in the conference with her throw of 39.68m. Mobley finished just behind with her distance of 33.28m.
In the 200m, senior Charisma Anderson broke her personal record with a first place time of 24.53. Her time was four tenths of a second off of assistant coach Le'Titia Silas' 200m school record set back in 1996.
“Charisma had a great day as well with her PR in the 200m, “ VanAlstyne said. “She has her sights on breaking Le'Titia's school record this season.”
Freshman Jaybria Calcote broke her personal record in the 400m with a time of 56.55, which was good for second. Her time puts her in the top five in the conference.
“Jaybria is finally understanding how to run the 400m and is definitely going to be a star in the future if she keeps it up,” commented VanAlstyne.
In the 800m race sophomore Kayla Conrad and freshman James Post were crowned with their times of 2:16.58 and 1:56.57, respectively. Currently, Post holds the top spot in the conference in the 800m and Conrad is number two on the women's side.
Johnathan Esteban was another Osprey to garner a first place finish, running the 3000m run in 8:36.17. Esteban broke a season best, solidifying his number one spot in the conference.
“This was a nice way to end the weekend and I was really pleased with how smoothly the meet went. It will be nice to have a couple of weeks to get ready and prepare ourselves for the FSU Twilight and put our right foot forward for our conference meet in May,” commented VanAlstyne after the meet.
