JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida golf team heads to Statesboro, Ga. and the 31st Annual Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational on Friday-Sunday, March 19-21.
The three round tournament at the par 72, 6,962-yard Forest Heights Country Club will consist of 18 holes each day, with Friday's first round tee times set between 9-11 a.m. Saturday's second round tee times are also from 9-11 a.m., with the final round on Sunday beginning between 8-11 a.m.
In addition to North Florida and the host school, Georgia Southern, the 15-team field also includes Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Virginia. South Carolina won last year's tournament.
“This tournament is another great test for us,” said UNF head coach Scott Schroeder. “The field has 12 schools from the ACC and SEC which is always fun to compete against the best. Georgia Southern and Coach Mayes run a great event and it is the one away event we look forward to more than any other. It should be a great weekend.”
The Ospreys finished fourth out of 18 teams in their last outing at the Rio Pinar Invitational, March 15-16, at Rio Pinar Country Club in Orlando, Fla. The top finisher for North Florida at the Rio Pinar was freshman Kevin Phelan who shot 2-under in the final round and tied for eighth, shooting an even-par 216 for the tournament (72-74-70). His final round 70 was the best round by any Osprey during the tournament.
UNF is nationally ranked in both national rankings, sitting 23rd in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and 28th in the Golfstat.com index. Sophomore Sean Dale leads North Florida with a No. 21 national ranking in Golfstat.com and 25th in Golfweek, but is out for his second straight tournament with a sprained ankle.
Competing for UNF at the Schenkel E-Z-Go Invitational are senior J.C. Horne, junior Chris Kennedy, sophomores Kevin Aylwin and Joe Byun, and Phelan. Senior Jordan Gibb will be competing as an individual.
Three-hole live scoring will be conducted each day using www.GolfStat.com and additional info can be found at the tournament website at www.schenkelinvitational.com.
