JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Senior pitcher Devyn Findley tied a career high 13 strikeouts en route to a no-hitter that lasted until the seventh inning, defeating Winthrop, 3-0, in the first day of the Winthrop Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. The University of North Florida softball team also downed Delaware State, 4-1.
Despite being delayed by rain for the majority of the day, the Ospreys (10-14) won two in a row to gain back their momentum. Sophomore Shaina Dent (2-6), received a win against Delaware State and Findley (8-7) recorded her eighth win of the season in her complete game shut out, whiffing 13 and allowing one hit.
The Alachua, Fla. native had four multiple strikeout innings, including the first and sixth innings where she struck out the side. Through four innings of work, Findley worked on a perfect game until Eagle catcher Kelly Blea drew the walk.
After breaking the perfect game, Blea would strike again in the seventh with a bloop single to left field, just out of the reach of shortstop Britanie Block and left fielder Alyson Bailey.
On the other side, the Lady Eagles' Cari Wooldridge shared a good performance in the pitching circle with her complete game that saw 11 strikeouts and two earned runs.
The Ospreys drove in runs in the second, fifth and sixth innings recording six hits in total. Senior Airen Payne took Wooldridge deep to left center for North Florida's third run of the game. Overall Payne went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
UNF is scheduled to play N.C. State at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Weather on Sunday is forecasted to be partly cloudy with a high of 61 degrees in Rock Hill, S.C. The Ospreys' match up against N.C. A&T was scratched due to rescheduling from the rain.
