UNF Men’s Tennis to Open 2010 Season

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida men's tennis team will open the season on the road at Georgia State on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. before returning home for a pair of contests on Sunday, Jan. 31 to face Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.

Freshman Daniel Sotomarino, along with teammates junior Gleb Maslau and senior Kurt Gattiker, are ranked in the recent ITA poll.

Sotomarino and Maslau enter the spring season ranked 39th nationally in the doubles rankings and fifth in the southeast region. The duo teamed up in the fall, winning the B Flight at the UNF Fall Invitational with four doubles wins over that weekend.

Sotomarino also saw success in singles action and is ranked 14th in the southeast region entering into the spring portion of the schedule. He picked up a win over A-Sun rival and No. 62 ranked ETSU's Jeremy Bonevalle at the UNF Fall Invitational. He also won the singles B flight at the Seminole Invitational, hosted by Florida State.

Gattiker enters the spring ranked 17th in the region in singles. He picked up a pair of wins over ranked teams in the fall. He defeated No. 1 Armstrong State's Paul Fitzgerald and 62nd-ranked ETSU's Ofir Weintraub.

Georgia State will open the season on Jan. 29 against Austin Peay. The Panthers faced 10 ranked teams during the regular season in 2009 before falling in the quarterfinals of the Colonial Athletic Association tournament.

Bethune-Cookman opened the season with a 7-0 loss at Stetson on Jan. 27. BCU finished with a 11-9 record overall and 2-2 in the MEAC last season.

Florida A&M was picked to finish second in the southern division of the 2010 MEAC preseason poll. The Rattlers posted a 13-6 overall record while going 3-1 in the MEAC in 2009.
