JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Taking advantage of the 20 miles of white sandy beaches in Jacksonville, Fla., the University of North Florida’s volleyball team will host its first Osprey Summer Spike beach volleyball tournament fundraiser on Saturday and Sunday, Aug.1-2.
Open to all ages, this event will be a sneak peek into the future of sand volleyball becoming a norm for the collegiate level and look to what this spring sport will bring to the UNF volleyball scene.
The event will take place just south of the Jacksonville Beach Pier and is free to all spectators. Public parking is available at the pier.
Kevin Campbell, head coach of the UNF volleyball team and overseer of the tournament, has implemented this fundraising event to help support the Ospreys volleyball team, as well as boost their connection with the community.
“We would love to have everyone come out and support our team and play in the tournament,” said Campbell. “Even if you choose not to participate in the tournament come out and enjoy the atmosphere and get to know the UNF players, and our athletic department staff.”
The men, women and co-ed divisions will be broken into three different skills sects: “Open” will be for elite players, “A” will be for adults who play competitively and “B” will mostly consist of recreational players. There will also be a bracket for the juniors which will provide an 18-and-under, 16-and-under and a 14-and-under level.
Over the past several months Campbell has been working hard with different affiliations in Florida by either inviting teams or setting up advertisers. Despite being a first time event the beach tournament should spark the beginning of an emerging Osprey tradition under the sun on Jacksonville’s beautiful beaches.
