JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Incoming freshman Kevin Phelan led the way for current and former UNF golfers finishing third at the 92nd Florida State Amateur Championship at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra, Fla.
Nine current and former Osprey golfers competed in the Amateur Championship June 25-28, with eight of the nine making the cut and five finishing in the top 27.
Phelan finished as one of just three golfers to shoot under par, finishing with a 1-under 287, just one stroke out of second.
“What a great finish for Kevin playing in this championship, as a team we had a solid performance,” said Head Golf Coach Scott Schroeder. “For the amount of current UNF players who made the cut I’m really looking forward to the coming season, coaching this unique group of guys and competing for a National Championship.”
One of Phelan's highlights of the day was his birdie on the signature par 3, 17 hole on The Players Stadium Course.
Battling a 104 degree heat index Sunday, the Saint Augustine, Fla. shot rounds of 72, 70, 71 and 74, and If not for a triple bogey on the 18th hole yesterday, Phelan most likely would have finished second.
Garret Morrison, a former UNF golfer from the 1995-96 Division II Championship team, shot 3-over par Snday and finished with a 292, good for a tie for ninth. Recent UNF graduate, Jeff Dennis, shot a 296 and totaled 4-over par, tying for 19th.
Rising junior Chris Kennedy put together a solid round of golf with a 1-over par performance Sunday and shot a 297 for the tournament, finishing tied for 23rd. At 299, rising sophomore and Ole Miss transfer Sean Dale finished the day at par and tied for 27th.
Rising sophomore Joseph Byun (305) and rising junior Gavin Cambre (306) finished 35th and 36th, respectively. Former UNF golfer Steve Carter tied at 53rd with a 312 for the tournament.
The top fifteen finishers, plus ties, receive an exemption into next year’s Florida State Amateur Championship at Bay Hill Club and Lodge.
