JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nine current and former UNF golf players are participating in the 92nd Florida State Amateur Championship at The Players Stadium Golf Course in Jacksonville June 25-28.
Out of the nine, six are current players and eight have advanced to the weekend and the final two rounds.
Near the top of the leader board is incoming freshman Kevin Phelan. Phelan, a Saint Augustine, Fla. native, totaled a 2-under, 142 through two rounds and is tied for the eighth place. Recent graduate, Jeff Dennis, shot 1-under yesterday and shot par today in route to being tied for 10th at 143. At 144, Garret Morrison, who was on the 1995-96 Division II Championship team, is tied for 12th. Junior to be Chris Kennedy will also see the weekend after shooting a two-round, 147, tied for 25th.
“This is the best tournament played in the summer, and to have this many players competing in it from UNF is great exposure for our program,” said Head Golf Coach Scott Schroeder. “With this kind of competition it will be a great way for them to measure where their games are at.”
Also advancing were rising sophomore Joseph Byun (t29, 148), rising sophomore and Ole Miss transfer (t47, 151) Sean Dale, rising junior Gavin Cambre (t55, 152), and 1992-93 NAIA National Champion Steve Carter (t64, 153).
Rising sophomore Kevin Aylwin shot a two-round, 158, but did not make the cut.
