Sam Perry finishes with two RBI
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The University of North Florida baseball put up a strong fight at the plate but four errors allowed No. 25 Florida State to score six unearned runs and claim a 14-6 win at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville on Wednesday night.
Junior Kevin Martin, who was named to the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup earlier in the day, hit his team-leading seventh home run for UNF (14-20). Freshman TJ Gavlik and sophomore Sam Perry each had a double. Perry had a team-high two RBI.
FSU (19-10) made it tough on the Ospreys early, scoring seven runs through the first two innings. Three of the runs were helped by two UNF errors.
Martin struck back in the bottom of the second when he hit a high-fly ball to center that the wind pulled over the fence for a solo round-tripper.
The Ospreys revved their engines and got the wheels rolling in the bottom of the fourth.
Senior Brian Wilson led off with an infield hit to short, followed by a Preston Hale single up the middle. Wilson later scored on a wild pitch to cut it to 9- 2.
Junior TJ Thompson kept the rally going with a single to right center to bring Hale across the plate. Gavlik cleaned up with a double to bring in Thompson.
UNF put across two more runs in the bottom of the sixth when Perry smashed a two-run double to left center, bringing junior Kyle Dahl and Martin in to score. Despite the sudden outburst, it wasn't enough to overtake the Seminoles, who scored three more runs in the top of the sixth and added runs in the seventh and ninth.
Senior Ty Pryor (2-6) was credited with the loss after allowing eight runs on eight hits. Half of the runs he allowed were unearned. FSU's Bo O'Dell picked up the win after tossing 5.0 innings and allowing four runs on seven hits.
Smith and Wilson both finished with a team-high two hits. FSU's Stephen Cardullo, Jason Stidham and Mike McGee each had three RBI. Stidham knocked out two home runs.
UNF is now 1-2 all-time at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville and 1-5 against the Seminoles. The teams will meet once more on April 15 in Tallahassee, where the Ospreys won the first meeting of the season on March 4, 5-4.
The Ospreys will return to action this weekend for a three-game series against Atlantic Sun Conference foe Lipscomb in Nashville. With a series sweep, the Ospreys have a chance to move up as high as second place in the conference standings.
The series will begin at 7 p.m. eastern time on Friday and will wrap up with a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday. All games will be shown on ASun.TV.
