The weekend will be Parents Weekend and Alumni Weekend for the UNF baseball team
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The University of North Florida baseball team concludes its fall practice with its annual Blue/Gray Game and Alumni Game this weekend on Saturday, Oct. 17, and Sunday, Oct. 18, respectively. The Blue/Gray Game is set for 1 p.m., while the Alumni Game is slated for Noon.
The Blue/Gray Game will be the kickoff of both Alumni Weekend, but also Parents Weekend for the UNF baseball team. On Saturday, the Ospreys baseball team will split into two teams and square off in the final scrimmage of the season. The game is open to the public and admission is free.
“We started doing this awhile back to go along with Alumni Weekend,” head coach Dusty Rhodes stated. “That way we can get the parents of the new team to come up and all get together. It's a chance for the new players coming in, their parents and all the old guys to get to meet each other. We also introduce to them what we do during a game. If they join the Osprey Club, they can go in there and get free food and relax. We have a cookout for all the parents and players after the Blue/Gray Game. It has been pretty good the last couple of years. It is an opportunity for the parents to come and see their sons. It has worked out good.”
In addition to Parents Weekend, the Ospreys welcome back players from previous teams for the annual Alumni Game on Sunday afternoon. UNF's current baseball team will suit up against former players.
“We started doing this in 1988 when I first got here and the one thing I told those players were that you need to stay together because you never forget the guys you played with,” said Rhodes. “We started doing the Alumni Game around 1990-91, and those guys stayed together and we have been able to get guys to come back that played on that team in 1988. It has worked out pretty good for us over the years.”
“This is the last one for me so, I don't know what will happen in the future, but I hope they stay together and be part of it,” Rhodes added. “I know we have a lot of people coming back and it's great to see them come back. They bring their families, their kids. It is interesting to see them come back and to play them. Some of those guys are still pretty good. We have some players that are still in the Minor Leagues and some guys that played in the Japanese and Major Leagues. There are some guys coming back that can play pretty good. I think it will be good for us and good for the team.”
