JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - With the 193rd overall selection in the sixth round of the 2008 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft on Thursday, the Detroit Tigers picked University of North Florida junior closer Tyler Stohr.
Stohr became the second-highest Osprey drafted in the program's history, along with Tony Diggs, who was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the sixth round of the 1988 draft. Stohr is UNF's highest-drafted player since 1993, when Todd Dunn was chosen in the first round by the Brewers. Stohr is also UNF's highest-drafted player in the team's Division I era.
In 2008, Stohr recorded an Atlantic Sun Conference-leading 10 saves and finished the regular season tied for 11th in the nation in saves. He was named second-team all-conference after putting up a team-low 1.93 ERA and striking out 46 batters in 32.2 innings pitched.
Against ranked opponents, he made every appearance count. In 6.1 innings pitched, Stohr didn't allow a hit and recorded three saves while striking out 10. He currently stands fourth all-time on the UNF career saves list with 16.
Stohr made his name well-known in summer 2007, battling against the nation's best college players in the prestigious Cape Cod League with the Hyannis Mets, where he served as the team's closer. Stohr was named to the league's all-star team after posting a 2.08 ERA with five saves and 14 strikeouts.
UNF finished 29-26 overall in its third season of Division I competition and tallied an 18-15 conference record to finish fourth in the A-Sun. The Ospreys will enter their final transition year to Division I in 2009 before becoming eligible for postseason competition in 2010.
