JACKSONVILLE. Fla. – Four University of North Florida softball players earned All-Atlantic Sun Conference honors in an announcement that came from the league office.
Catcher Ashley Battaglia was selected as a first team member of the all-conference team and was joined by second team members Devyn Findley, Heather Hyde and Gwen Williams.
Battaglia was one of the best hitting catchers in the league this season, compiling a .322 batting average, while hitting .303 in conference play. She was also stellar on defense, throwing out 43 percent of would-be baserunners.
Williams and Hyde were a powerful duo in the infield for the Lady Ospreys this season, each setting personal career highs in home runs. Hyde led the Lady Ospreys with a .361 batting average, ranking among the top-10 in the league in hitting. She also led the team in doubles (15), runs (50), hits (65) and walks (30). Her 12 home runs tied the previous single-season home run mark at UNF.
That home run mark was bettered by Williams who hit 13 long balls this season and finishes with 28 in her career, tying teammate Ashley Parenteau for the all-time career home run mark at UNF. Williams hit .330 this season while also leading the team with 49 RBIs. She was also superb in the field, committing only three errors in more than 200 chances.
While Williams, Hyde and Battaglia were taking care of the runs for the Lady Ospreys, Findley was holding opposing offenses at bay. The UNF lefty led the league with a 0.91 ERA in league games and a 1.34 ERA overall. Findley struck out a career-high 228 hitters this season while compiling a 21-13 record.
This was the second all-conference recognition for Findley and Williams, while Battaglia and Hyde were honored for the first time.
UNF finished the 2008 season with a 39-24 record and would have made the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament for the third-straight year if it were not ineligible due to NCAA transfer rules.
