JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - University of North Florida baseball student-athletes Preston Hale and Travis Martin were named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District Team on Thursday.
Hale, who has a cumulative 3.82 grade point average as a sophomore criminal justice major, was named to the District 3 second team as an outfielder. A 2007 Atlantic Sun Conference all-academic and all- freshman selection, Hale leads the team in runs scored (48) and doubles (16).
He is also second in total bases (98), home runs (4), slugging percentage (.521), at bats (188), hits (68), walks (26) and on base percentage (.463). Hale is third on the Ospreys with 31 RBIs and is the team leader in being hit by pitch (11), total plate appearances (229) and starts (48).
Martin was named to the District 3 third team as a designated hitter after posting a 3.2 cumulative GPA as a senior history major. A 2007 ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA District 3 second team and four- time academic all-conference selection, he leads the team in batting average (.379), total bases (106), slugging percentage (.599), walks (28), on base percentage (.477) and home runs (8). He is also tied for the team lead in RBIs with 44.
The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track & field/cross country, women's track & field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red- shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible). In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
