BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The University of North Florida softball team split an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader with Campbell today to conclude its 2008 season.

UNF (39-24, 13-9 A-Sun) won game one of the doubleheader (4-1) but fell just short of a sweep, losing game two, 6-5.

The Lady Ospreys took an early lead in game one, scoring three unearned runs in the top of the first with the help of two errors and two walks. Heather Hyde added another run in the top of the second with a double that scored Ashley Parenteau, putting UNF ahead 4-0.

Devyn Findley held the Camels scoreless until the bottom of the sixth when she gave up a run-scoring single to Amanda Littlejohn. Findley shut things down from there and closed out the game with a 4-1 victory.

UNF found itself in a hole 2-0 after the first inning of game two after Tori Ahern gave up a two-run shot to Littlejohn. The Lady Ospreys cut the lead in half in the top of the third with a run scoring single by Gwen Williams.

Williams led the UNF offense in game two, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run scored.

The UNF bats came to life in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs off of three hits. Kara Rutenbar was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then moved up to second after Ashley Battaglia reached on a throwing error. Williams gave her team a 4-2 lead with a single up the middle the next at bat, driving in both Rutenbar and Battaglia. Kacie McCloud brought Williams in for the final run of the inning with a single to left field, putting UNF up 5-2.

Campbell fought back in the bottom half of the inning, cutting UNF’s lead down to 5-4 with a two-run homer by Littlejohn. The Camels scored one run in each of the next two innings to win the game 6-5.

Hyde finished game two 2-for-2 with a run scored, giving her three hits on the day.

The doubleheader against Campbell wrapped up the 2008 season for the Lady Ospreys and was the last game of head coach Sonya Wilmoth’s career. Wilmoth will end her career with a 537-375 record.
