UNF adds depth on the perimeter and a low post scoring threat
Jacksonville, Fla. – The University of North Florida women's basketball team announced Wednesday the signing of Dori Lansbach and Jennifer Pelham for the 2009-10 season.
Pelham, a 6-fooot-two-inch low post player, earned first team all-Nassau County honors at Yulee High School in Yulee, Fla., after a junior season that saw her average 10.7 points and 10.2 rebounds and convert on 83 percent of her free throw attempts. Her coach at Yulee High is Brian Shuster.
“She is a true big body presence and a great defensive presence,” UNF head coach Mary Tappmeyer said. “She is the big scoring presence inside that we need to complement our outside shooters. She still has her best basketball ahead of her.”
Pelham has two younger brothers and is the daughter of Sonya and John Robbins, who is a member of the National Guard. Pelham is also a member of the Team B.A.L.L AAU team, which is coached by Shelia Seymore-Pennick.
Several other in-state schools recruited Pelham, including fellow Atlantic Sun Conference members Stetson and Jacksonville, as well as Florida and Central Florida. At UNF, she plans to pursue a psychology major.
Lansbach, a left handed-shooting guard, has been named the team MVP at Traverse City Central High School in Traverse City, Mich., where she plays for Larry Truelove, for three years running. She became a starter on the varsity squad at the age of 13 and received the honor of Most Athletic Female at her high school as a freshman.
“Lansbach is a fundamentally sound, mid-west, blue-collar guard,” Tappmeyer said. “She was a prolific scorer in high school and has a great knowledge of the game.”
The daughter of Marcie and Luke Lansbach she was also tabbed as the winter season player of the year in the Big North Conference following her junior season, in which she averaged over 20 points per game and served as a co-captain for Traverse City Central. She served as freshman class President and has been a member of the National Honor Society throughout her high school career, compiling at least a 3.945 gpa each year. She has also attended summer basketball camps at University of Southern California, Michigan University, Michigan State University, Pepperdine University, University of San Diego and Central Michigan University, in addition to playing in showcases such as the Nike Chicago Showcase, the Michigan Showcase, the Great Lakes College Classic Showcase and the Top-100 College Showcase.
Playing for coaches Larry Slade and Mark Denouyelles, Lansbach began playing the AAU circuit after her freshman season. She has also earned letters as a varsity softball and volleyball player. On the basketball court, she led the Big North in scoring from the opening day of her junior season and garnered all-conference, all-region and all-state honors. Additionally, she tied her high school's record for most points in a half (21) and became her school's fourth all-time leading scorer last season.
