JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Even though rain caused several delays at the first day of the 2008 UNF Invitational, the University of North Florida men's and women's tennis teams didn't let the weather put a damper on its day.
Players on the women's team combined to go 6-1 in singles and doubles tournament play. In the A flight, freshman Aline Berkenbrock downed Georgia Southern's Ali Beavers, 6-3, 6-0. Berkenbrock teamed up with senior Ina Durcakova in the doubles A flight to defeat Bethune-Cookman's Eva Hankova and Monika Musilova, 8-2. Durcakova was victorious in her B singles match, putting down Fanni Friski of South Carolina State, 6-0, 6-2.
Sophomore Lauren Holton joined Durcakova in the B flight and notched a 6-0, 5-7, 7-5 win over Bethune-Cookman's Stacy Lopez. Freshman Nikita Van Lierop was victorious in her C singles match, posting a 6-4, 6-2, win over UAB's Ceylan Engin. Holton and Van Lierop joined forces in the B doubles flight to record an 8-4 win over Beth Erwin of Samford and Caroline Jouanin of Troy.
The dampness was a major thorn in the men's brackets, allowing them to only play doubles. Sophomore Graham Edgar was the top men's performer for UNF, teaming up with Belmont's Fausto Rocha to pick up wins over Georgia Southern's Edio Castanhel and Alain Garrido (8-6) and Jacksonville's Murilo Souza and Victor Vaz (8-6).
Kurt Gattiker and Marcos Chiaretti came out on the short end of a hotly contested match against Auburn's Milan Krnjetin and Alex Stamchev, falling 9-7.
The second day of the tournament will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday, with matches being played at both the UNF Tennis Complex and Florida Community College at Jacksonville Tennis Complex.
