Nancy Miller is dedicated to the University of North Florida women’s basketball program, to say the least. Since being a member of the inaugural UNF women’s basketball team in 1992, she has stuck with the Osprey women’s basketball program and head coach Mary Tappmeyer throughout the program’s 18-year history.
A four-time letterwinner herself, Miller enters her 11th year as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, and has been a part of every game in Osprey basketball history.
“Being part of this program since its inception has been special, and helping coach Tappmeyer navigate it to the NCAA Division I level has been a unique and very rewarding experience,” Miller said. “UNF and our women’s basketball program are a part of my heart. I truly feel like I have been in a partnership with coach Tappmeyer over these many years in terms of building the program, recruiting high-quality student-athletes and watching the program develop.”
Miller names recruiting and having the opportunity to make personal connections with prospective student-athletes and their families as one of her favorite duties.
“I think the University of North Florida is poised on the brink of greatness, both academically and athletically,” she said. “For years, UNF has been known as a regional institution, but as the city of Jacksonville has grown, and the leadership of the University has steered the campus’ growth and expansion, UNF is headed toward achieving great things.”
Miller said she is also excited about the athletic department’s transition to NCAA Division I and the impact it will have on the future of the program.
“Division I opens up a lot more doors with potential recruits,” Miller said. “It has given the program more visibility on a bigger stage, which is a tremendous plus as well.”
Miller serves in a variety of capacities for Tappmeyer. In addition to serving as recruiting coordinator, she is also responsible for scouting, on-court coaching and working with the post players.
As a founding member of Tappmeyer’s team from 1992-96, Miller was successful both in the classroom and on the basketball court. She was a Rhodes Scholarship State Finalist and graduated Summa Cum Laude in 1996 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. She received an NCAA Women’s Enhancement Postgraduate Scholarship in 1996, and in 1998, earned her master’s degree in public administration.
On the court, she was the first UNF player — men’s or women’s — to score 1,000 points, which she accomplished as a junior, finishing her career with 1,269. That number stood as the all-time high in UNF history until Skye Barber broke it during the 2003-04 season. Miller still stands as the second-highest scorer in UNF women’s basketball history. In 2009, she was inducted into the UNF Athletic Hall of Fame.
Born in Seattle, she is single and resides in Jacksonville. She enjoys spending time with her family, watching movies, reading, running and playing with her dog, “Rebound.”
